If you suspect you may have a sleep disorder, please fill out the Sleep Apnea Screening Tool available on this web site or at your clinic (assuming your hospital partners with Whitney Sleep*). Share the screening tool with your healthcare provider. Based on your responses, your provider may make a referral for you to have an overnight sleep study.
If referred, Whitney Sleep will contact your insurance to verify benefits and determine what your out of pocket cost will be for your study and treatment. Whitney Sleep will contact you to schedule your study.
On the night of the study, pack a small bag with your sleeping clothes. Please bring a two piece sleep outfit--a tee shirt and gym shorts or sweat sweat outfit. Slippers are welcome. You can also pack a snack, or something non-caffeinated to drink.
Avoid any caffeinated beverages after noon on the day of your study.
You will be asked to arrive at your local partner hospital at either 8:30 or 9:15. Once there, you will be greeted by our Registered Sleep Technician who will explain the purpose of the different leads that will be attached to record data; as well as explain how CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) works. If after a few hours of sleep, the study reveals that you have sleep apnea, you will be fitted with a CPAP and tested during the second half of the night to find the appropriate airway pressure. Having sleep data with and without CPAP will illustrate the significance of treatment if you have sleep apnea.
Sleep Studies are painless and designed to encourage easy, normal sleep. Monitors record a patient's breathing rate, oxygen levels, EKG (heart rhythm) and EEG (brain waves), as well as the movement of eyes, chin, and legs. We even measure the volume of your snoring. Overnight tests are completed by about 6:30-7:00am.
About a week after your sleep study, you will return to the hospital for a follow up appointment via telehealth with a Board Certified Sleep Specialist where you will learn the results of your study and what treatment options area available (if applicable). During this appointment, you may be prescribed CPAP therapy which can be obtained through Whitney Sleep or any other medical equipment supplier.
